In other situations, soil needs additional support before a patio, walkway, planting area, or other outdoor improvement can be created. A properly built retaining wall can help manage these conditions while becoming an attractive part of the surrounding landscape.

Retaining Wall Design & Installation

A retaining wall needs to do more than look good. It must be planned around the amount of soil being retained, changes in grade, water movement, nearby features, and the conditions behind and below the wall.

Before construction, our team evaluates the layout of the property, existing drainage patterns, access to the work area, and how the wall will connect with the surrounding landscape. A small landscape wall used to create a planting area has different requirements from a taller wall supporting a substantial change in elevation.

Installation methods are equally important. Excavation, foundation preparation, compaction, backfill, and proper placement of the wall system all contribute to long-term performance. By considering these factors together, we can build a wall suited to both its location and intended use.

Retaining walls can also be coordinated with pavers, hardscaping services, patios, walkways, landscaping, and other improvements when the wall is part of a larger outdoor project.

When Do You Need a Retaining Wall?

Not every slope requires a retaining wall, but there are several situations where one can provide a practical solution.

Sloped or Uneven Ground – Retaining walls can support changes in elevation and help create more manageable sections of a property.
Erosion and Soil Movement – Where runoff is carrying soil downhill or washing out landscaped areas, a properly planned wall can help stabilize the affected area as part of the overall drainage solution.
Creating Usable Space – A wall can help turn sloped ground into flatter areas for lawns, planting beds, walkways, patios, and other outdoor features.
Landscape Terracing – Multiple elevations can be divided into defined planting or landscape areas rather than leaving a difficult continuous slope.
Failing Existing Walls – Leaning, bulging, settling, separating, or deteriorating walls may need to be evaluated and replaced.

The right solution depends on what is happening on the property. Rather than adding a wall simply because an area is sloped, we consider what the wall needs to accomplish and whether it is the right approach for the site.

Retaining Wall Materials & Options

Retaining walls can be constructed using different materials and wall systems depending on the project. Material selection should account for structural requirements, appearance, surrounding hardscapes, maintenance, and the character of the home and landscape.

Segmental concrete retaining wall systems are a popular option and are available in a variety of sizes, textures, and finishes. They can work well for landscape walls, terraces, grade transitions, and larger retaining applications. Material selection should ultimately be based on the wall's structural requirements, site conditions, and desired appearance rather than aesthetics alone.

For properties with existing patios, paver walkways, outdoor living areas, or other masonry features, the wall can also be planned to complement those materials and create a more cohesive finished landscape.

Drainage & Proper Retaining Wall Construction

Water is one of the most important considerations in retaining wall construction. When water accumulates in the soil behind a wall, it can increase the pressure placed on the structure and contribute to movement, bulging, settlement, or premature failure.

Proper drainage begins with understanding how water already moves across the property. Depending on the wall and site conditions, construction may incorporate drainage aggregate, appropriate backfill, drainage pipe or other provisions that allow water to move away instead of becoming trapped behind the structure.

The foundation beneath the wall is just as important. Proper excavation and preparation provide a stable base, while careful compaction helps reduce unwanted settlement.

For taller or more structurally demanding walls, additional reinforcement or engineering may be required. Height is not the only consideration; steep slopes, soil conditions, nearby driveways or structures, and other loads can also affect what the wall needs to support. We evaluate these factors when determining how the wall should be constructed.

Replacing a Failing Retaining Wall

An existing retaining wall can develop problems for several reasons. Poor drainage, inadequate base preparation, soil movement, improper construction, or changes to the surrounding property can all affect its performance over time.

Warning signs can include:

A wall that is leaning or bowing
Blocks or sections separating
Significant settlement
Soil washing through or around the wall
Recurring drainage problems
Cracking or other visible deterioration

Replacing a failing wall should involve more than removing the old materials and rebuilding the same structure. The underlying reason for the failure needs to be considered so the replacement can address the conditions that contributed to the original problem.
